Why Welsh

Welsh is a Celtic language spoken by over 800,000 people in Wales, with speaker numbers growing thanks to dedicated revitalization efforts. It's the language of a rich literary tradition stretching back 1,500 years, and it's increasingly present in Welsh public life, education, and media.

Welsh looks intimidating on the page -- all those consonant clusters and double-L's. But its spelling is actually highly regular, and its grammar, while different from English, follows consistent rules that reward careful study.

What makes Welsh challenging — and how Maia helps

Initial consonant mutations

Welsh changes the first letter of words based on grammatical context. "Cymru" (Wales) becomes "Nghymru" or "Chymru" depending on what comes before. Maia teaches the three mutation types with clear rules and extensive practice.

VSO word order

Welsh puts the verb first: "Dwi'n hoffi coffi" = "Am-I liking coffee." Maia builds familiarity with this word order through structured conversation practice.

Two number systems

Welsh has both a traditional vigesimal (base-20) and a modern decimal number system. Maia teaches the modern system first for practicality, then introduces the traditional forms.
